Here in the side view, you can see that the reel is in very good condition. Even the sticker with the large „S“ is still there! And you can see the four screws in the rear side cover, which is quite rare to find, especially on the 331 S!

Shown here in a front view with the original spool. Also clearly visible is the superior handle, a feature included on these specific models, whereas the „standard“ versions came with cheap, injection-molded handles that, unfortunately, were not particularly sturdy.

This reel also features the very rare Rollex spool, more on that below.

Here is a copy of a newspaper advertisement from back then, for the Rollex spool.

What stands out here, is that the rotor, both inside and out, is now anodized and painted.

Here is a look inside the high-speed gear system, you can immediately see that the gear teeth have a slightly different pitch. The 331 S has a gear ratio of 4.85:1, whereas the 330 has a ratio of 3.5:1. Additionally, a one-piece steel drive component was used for the spool.

Here you can see that the housing has been redesigned so that the rotor plate is now formed as a single piece with the housing. This makes the reels somewhat more robust.

Here is a comparison of the two spools, the Rollex is on the left, and the original is on the right. The Rollex spool featured a so-called „fighting drag“ (combat drag) system for large fish, it incorporated two separate drag systems, identifiable by the two adjustment dials, which, naturally, also meant there were two distinct sets of drag washers!

Here are the two reels viewed from the back, either both manufacturers purchased individual components from the same supplier, or Rollex sourced the parts from DAM? The Rollex spool was designed to fit DAM reel models Finessa 285, 330, and 331 S. However, there were others available as well, for instance, for Mitchell reels.

Here’s another look through the window, you can see the fresh, acid-free grease!
